About this session
Reading the climate. The trend to watch is self-censorship: people no longer voice beliefs whose holding and expression the law still protects. Two cases mark the range, Grech in Malta, acquitted, and Räsänen in Finland, prosecuted and pursued to Strasbourg. Same freedoms, opposite endings; that uncertainty is what silences people.
Preparing to stand. What preparation looks like before trouble comes: knowing the relevant rights (Articles 8, 9 and 10 of the Convention, and the prior right of parents), seeking legal advice early, and not being isolated. Grech's case shows why it matters: he was acquitted (I am aware that was 1st instance and it has since been appealed, hearing scheduled for fall 2026, so I’ll stay alert), and it still cost him years, because the process itself can function as the punishment.
Protecting families and children. The same pattern reaches the home, but also the therapeutic profession. Parents hold the legal right to raise children in line with their convictions, yet many are unsure they may say so. This part looks at where that right stands and how families and schools can support it.
