About this session
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are associated with enduring effects on psychological development, affect regulation, attachment, and self-concept. This presentation examines the potential clinical intersections between childhood adversity, developmental trauma, attachment disruptions, and gender identity development. Particular attention is given to how early relational wounds may influence identity formation, body experience, emotional regulation, and interpersonal functioning. Current research regarding ACEs and gender-related distress is considered within a multifactorial developmental framework, distinguishing correlation from causation and recognizing biological, psychological, relational, and sociocultural influences. Clinical implications emphasize comprehensive assessment, differential formulation, trauma-informed care, and careful exploration of each individual’s developmental history and presenting concerns.
